| About the Atoll |

 Atoll Map
There are four natural atolls in the administration of Kaafu atoll, which are Gaafaru Atoll, Kaashidhoo Atoll, North Male Atoll and the South Male Atoll.
Thulsudhoo is the Admistrative capital of the atoll and is in the north Male Atoll, whilst Male the capital of Maldives, is also in the north Male Atoll. The Hulhule International airport and villingilli, whic are administrative districts of the capital but seperate islands, are also situated in north Male Atoll.
The islands of the atoll are:

- Himmafushi
- Dhiffushi
- Maafushi
- Guraidhoo
- Gulhi
- Huraa
- Thulusdhoo
- Gaafaru
The Atoll consist of many tourist islands, since the atoll accomodates an international airport. Maldives is famous for its beautiful beaches, turqoise lagoons and the serenity of the calm ecosystems.
This natural beauty of atoll formations at mere sea level attracts thousands of tourists from around the globe every year. The Hulhule island which is considered as an admistrative district of the capital Male (The henveiru district/ward) is the Male International Airport which has been developing since it was founded in the late 70's. This was the begining of a new era for the Maldivian economy as it surpassed the primary and secondary industries into the tertiary serivce market of tourism.
Although tourism is a popular and mainstay for the economy of this Atoll, the fishing industry is virtually inseperable from the locals.
Male, capital is situated at the southern tip of North Male Atoll, whislt Thulsdhoo is situated on the South-Easter rim of the North Male Atoll. As mentioned before, Kashidhoo and Gaafaru are accomodated within their own respective geographical atolls. Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru atoll are due north of the North Male Atoll. The other islands which are located within the North Male Atoll are, Dhifushi, Huraa, Himmafushi and Male.The Sothern Male Atoll which not too far away and is over the 4° longitude accomodates Gulhi, Guraidhoo and Maafushi.

The Island is equipped with adequate basic facilities for the common and basic needs as water , energy.
The island was minimally affected during the december 2004 tsunami.

Geography
Isolated and situated North to North Male Atoll within its own geographical atoll, known as Kaashidhoo Atoll. The Atoll formation is 48 miles north of the capital Male, and situated in the "Kaashidhoo Kandu" (kandu : Dhivehi for Sea)
Land Area
24 million square feet of land, with 8000 feet NE-SW as the longest and 3200 at the widest dimensions.
The Island
The majority of the land is unused and due to the comparative abundance of it, agricultural has rooted as a mainstay for the local economy. The variety of products include chinese cabbages, cabbages, raddish, beans, pumpkins, water-melons etc...
The island's health facility was built in February 1999 while the educational facility, a school, was built in April 1984 and upgraded in January 1986.
The island is equipped with modern telecommunication systems such as the cellular phones and local telephone network and radio telephone system (Island Office).
The island is totally isolated from the rest of the atoll imposing a significant challange to establish its transportation with the rest of the Kaafu Atoll. The Agency Post Office, presence of a local internet service provider and the abundance of satellite television receiving dish antennaes are note worthy for a sparsely populated island in its isolation.
The island houses a state owned power station and is equipped to provide electricity 24 hours. The state owned water tanks provide adequate storage capacities , yet the locals install their own storage vessels as well.
The island reef has been dredged and a harbour constructed. A vas perimeter of the surrounding reef is protected by an artifical water break which was destructed beyond fucntion by the december 2004 tsunami, The natural disaster has rendered the reef shallower as well.
The major landmarks include the Kashidhoo Island Office, Kaashidhoo Island Court, Kaashidhoo Health Centre, Kaashidhoo Atoll School, Kaashidhoo Climate Observatory, Kaashidhoo Womens' Centre, Masjid'ul Niumaa, Old Friday Mosque, Masjid'ul Furqaan, Masjid'ul Ihusaan, Masjid'ul Amaan.

Geography
2 Miles from the capital, the island is situated in the North Male Atoll and is one of the islands situated furthest to the north-east, in the country. The sits on the natural water break for the atoll hence the eastern side of the island houses a very narrow reef. A narrow white beach envelopes the perimeter of the island.
Land Area
3250 feet long and 837½ feet wide with 2.7 million square feet, the land of the island seems to be exhausted by the intensive urbanisation.
The Island
The educational facility was a small time school which was instated it the year 1981. A proper school was founded in the year 1989 which strated functioning by 1991.
The health system seems inadequate due to lack of basic equipment and personnel, even with the health post built in 2004.
The main stream public transportation is provided by a ferry operated between the capital and the island, by a private enterprenuer on a weekly basis. The main economic industry is fishing industry, with pole and line being the most common. Also, prawn and lobster industry seems to be growing. The island hosts many souvenoir tourist shops with twice a week excursion trips for tourists to the island, from nearby resorts.
The island is developing at a steady rate, with planned urbanization and erection if street lamps, the island is far from a rural community. The living standard has risen with more and more electrnonic appliances such as televisions, video cassette recorders, cd/dvd players, personal computers being a basic neccesity rather a luxury. With developing technologies like cellular phones and satellite television receivers, the islands' communication seems to be developing at a fast pace.
Majority of the house holds have a proper toilet with a latrine/water closet, yet the island lacks a proper sewage network.
Major landmarks of Dhiffushi include, the Dhiffushi Island Office, Dhiffushi Island House, Masjid'ul Taqwa, Masjid'ul Zahuraa, Masjid'ul Jaamiu, Dhiffushi School, Community Centre and Habour.
The December 2004 tsunami damaged the artificial water break around the island also shallowing the dredged harbour.

Geography
Situated South East, in the North Male Atoll near the island of Huraa. The Island is inter-connected to the island of Gaamaadhoo (correctional facility till recent).
Land Area
2250 feet long and 1825 wide, the island is a total 4.1 square feet of land.
The Island
Sourrounded by luxurious holiday resorts, the island of Himmafushi depends mainly on the tourism sector. Education is given a top priority with a public primary school operated by the local community, established. Even though a minor expense, a part of the operating cost is sponsored by near by resorts.
An education development fund was established in 1998. The main public transportation is a daily ferry (except fridays) between Male and Himmafushi which is operated by a private entreprenuer.
Major landmarks of the island include the 2 dredged harbours, the Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Himmafushi Island Office, Himmafushi School, Big Fish Processing Factory, Ship Yard, Stelco Power House, International Beverages Company, Neel Orchid Pharm, Island house, Island court and the health centre.

Geography
Situated South East to Male in the South Male Atoll, between Male and Maafushi.
Land Area
1283 feet long and 591 feet wide, this island is a total 0.76 million square feet in area.
The Island
The Island is a predominantly fishing community with a very small harbour which consists of a small and old jetty. The island yet lacks a proper health care facility or personnel. Educational framework and facility is poor with only primary schooling and limited teachers.
Unemployment rate is high with a low efficiency working age population. The reasons could be due to the over populated island, which is small and lack of jobs.
The possible solutions suggested for the development of this island include stregthening the educational framework to create a more skillful labour force.
The main landmarks include the Gulhi Island Office, Island court, Island House.
The December 2004 tsunami affected the island badly by damaging a lot private and public property. The island is still thriving to lift itself up from this depression.

Geography
The South Most inhabited island in Male Atoll, is situated in South Male Atoll about 14 miles from Male. The island has naturally deep reef adequate for a harbour.
This is a naturally beautiful reef, which is a deep truqoise, and is a popular unofficial marina for the safari yatchs.
Land Area
1800 feet long and 1070 feet wide this island is a total 1.9 million square feet in area. The fertility of the soil decreased dramtically post-tsunami rendering the island almost a desert compared to the variety of vegetation before.The land occupancy for this island is at a 100% with only the coconut grove remaining.
The Island
This rapidly developing island has depleted its water table entriely. Leakage of the household improper sewage system aggravates the problem of ground water pollution further.
Establishment of a modern sewage network by the International Federation of Red Crosses and Red Crescents is under progress.Education is developing fast, with schooling upto the 9th grade. The Island also consists of a proper Health facility. The island based communities are strong with a very communal spirit. The presence of a good youth community involved at the apex of the coutries leading sports are of note worthy. The island consists the Home for People with Special Needs.
Tourism stands as the economic mainstay for the locals.
